Ripped from the headlines of our homeschooling days!

Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes….

Our son was sick most of last week, so we didn’t have a lot of school time.  But we’re back this week with a revised line-up:

Though I specified his age several times when we signed up, it appears my son may be a bit young for band.  We will be keeping the clarinet rental, but just working with him privately (hubby has a background in music).

Pardon the pun, but we’ll be bowing out of square-dancing as well (for now).  This group was for 3rd grade & up, & moved at a faster pace, and we don’t want a repeat of band, though he has had square-dance before.  But we missed the first 2 weeks with other commitments & sickness.  She has another class in January that is a multi-generational group held at the senior center & I really like the sound of that!

Another friend from church is an artist.  She will be providing private art instruction to our son.  He is wild about drawing & painting, so this should be great!

We have just started our third year of homeschooling & only this week have I experienced the whole “what am I doing?” self-talk.  It’s been harder this year to get my son to be more self-disciplined with me.  Yes, it’s fun reading at noon in your pj’s….but homeschooling is sooooo much more than that.  It’s being able to craft your vision of what a true education is, as well as the environment in which that happens.

I’m sure it’s a mere speedbump on the homeschooling highway, but disconcerting nonetheless. Part of it appears to be a growth spurt…there are always minor behavioral changes during a growth spurt.  But challenges always cause me to re-evaluate & tweak…so things only end up getting better in the long run.

On a positive note, our current session of LEGO Robotics is coming to an end, but we will be going right back into a 10 week session that will be concurrent with our involvement in the JFLL!  It’s a “competition” level Robotics league, but at the Jr. level it’s mainly exhibition & a group cooperative effort.  We’re really excited!

We also did the Family Dinner Table thing on Monday.  We had been doing that as a family for a loooong while, but just got away from it because work has ramped up for both of us…Each of us works part time, so it gets crazy sometimes!

We’re also going to be doing some of the adapted curriculum stuff with the JASON Project…sounds fascinating!

I guess that should keep us busy for awhile, no?
