Ripped from the headlines of our homeschooling days!

Swimming! Hooray!

swimMy son starts swimming lessons today! This is big news for a boy who until recently really, really, really (did I mention really?) hated water! He would play in the sink, like most kids, but would never really play in a sprinkler or anything like most kids love to do.

As a baby, we would bathe him by taking him into the shower with us, so we could hold him close. When we tried to bathe him in the baby tub, he just hated it!

He resisted taking baths in the tub until he was about 2.5, then he discovered they were kinda fun. Then recently, he started taking showers on his own because he wanted to be a big boy “like Daddy”.

Last year, he fell into a pool by accident. It really scared him (as it would anyone, I suppose!) Though it freaked him out, he was very proud that he “swam” to the top.

And recently, at the local library, there is a little mini water play area for the kids. He has really taken a liking to it. He won’t completely get wet, but he runs around and gets sprayed, touches the water, and generally has a great time. He asks to go just about every day! This is a good sign!

So, a couple of months ago, when one of my co-workers at the knitting studio I work at, suggested that she teach my son to swim in exchange for knitting lessons, I thought it would be a great opportunity. Today is our first lesson and my son woke up so excited!
